Strong summer attendance and a full lineup ahead at the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo
The Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo saw exceptionally strong attendance this summer, as visitors responded enthusiastically to varied programming and reduced annual pass prices.
The park welcomed nearly 99,000 visitors in June, July and August, compared with nearly 79,000 during the same period last year. Annual pass sales surged following the price reduction, and visitor feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
The park hummed with energy and activity all summer long. Returning for a second consecutive year, Tívolí Tónleikar created a fantastic atmosphere as seasoned musicians and talented young people from the Reykjavík school bands took the stage. The Puppet Bus made several summer appearances, delighting visitors of all ages. For the Commerce Day public holiday, visitors enjoyed a lively show by Leikhópurinn Lotta, and a visit from members of the Icelandic Vintage Car Club drew considerable interest.
This summer, Reykjavík's School of Work, Reykjavík's youth employment program, offered young musicians and performers a first-time opportunity to practice their craft. Young actors and participants from the Reykjavík school bands rehearsed and performed at the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo, alongside other local venues. Park staff deemed the project an exceptional success, praising the young participants for their admirable conduct. The impressive talent on display sparked hope that the initiative will continue in the coming years.
Following a busy, event-filled summer, the park still has plenty in store. A popular year-round outdoor destination, the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo will celebrate Icelandic Nature Day on Sept. 16 by treating visitors to an exciting virtual reality journey through a puffin colony.
The park will host a varied program of events on Sunday, Sept. 27, to celebrate the European Week of Sport. A range of activities, including yoga sessions and a hobby horsing course, will encourage visitors to get moving. Originating in Finland, hobby horsing has grown increasingly popular worldwide in recent years. The sport tests endurance, balance and coordination as participants run and jump over obstacles with hobby horses to mimic traditional show jumping.
Preparations are already underway for the park's popular fall and winter events. Halloween festivities and the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo's Christmas programming are currently in the works, giving visitors plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
The Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with select playground equipment available on weekends through the fall but closed on weekdays. Visitors can see the animals throughout opening hours, and the Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo's playground remains open.
